Over the centuries, the Parish Church of St Andrew, Backwell, has gone through many changes. These include the nation’s shattering period in the sixteenth century, known as the Reformation, which saw violent divisions within Christianity and signified the end of the mediaeval and the beginning of the early modern period. Learn more about this Grade 1 listed building on your doorstep on 16th June at 3.00pm, when Sir Paul Britton gives a talk entitled "The architecture of St Andrew's Church: some mediaeval archaeological puzzles, Reformation destruction and subsequent restorations". There will be time for questions and to explore the building. The talk is followed by a scrumptious tea at 4.00pm in one of the more recent additions to the building. Known as Church House, this lovely modern room gives a glorious view of the village and beyond. Lastly, starting at 5.00pm you have an opportunity to experience the words and music which both originated at the time of the Reformation and survived it. A considerable part of the impact of the Reformation arose from ordinary people being able to read the Bible and worship in their own language. Come and bathe in the sounds of Evensong on what, we hope, will be a beautiful summer evening. Families are very welcome, under 16 years are free and teenagers may find this gives them insight to the history of the period. There will be an activity for younger children. The talk and the tea require tickets (£10), which are limited. Evensong is open to everyone. Tickets can be bought through Eventbrite or contacting Ann Heymans.
